The Nicene Creed begins,

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

Millions of Christians, for nearly 1,700 years have agreed on this very simple statement. So it’s simple, right?

Actually, while we’ve managed to preserve our agreement on this very basic statement about the nature of God, our real knowledge and experience doesn’t even scratch the surface of the depth of his character.

When you pray, you talk to the Maker of heaven and earth – the One who is holy in a way we could never understand.

Don’t make the mistake of defining God’s holiness by human measurement. His goodness not merely the sum total of the best of humanity, minus all the sin. He isn’t merely good by human standards.

God is transcendent. He is different. He is apart. And while he created mankind in his own image, as creatures limited by time and space, we cannot possibly reflect the full identity and glory of our Creator. Further, our sinful choices have marred that image.

And God remains holy. Perfect. Without blemish. Incapable of sin or deceit, or even error, because such would be inconsistent with his very being.

And this holy, holy… holy God… invites you in. He calls for you to come. In fact…

He wants you there. And whether you know it yet or not, you need a holy God. No one else could rescue us, for all of eternity, from the chaos to which this planet has been given for so long.

And he wants to rescue you, starting now, in this life.

Prayer Prompt

Reach out for the rescue God offers you. Tell God that you recognize his holiness, your unholiness, and his Son, Jesus, as the only Peacemaker between you.
