The Core Values That Guide Us

It is our core values that wind up shaping the culture around us, and as Peter Drucker famously said, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.”

That’s true for individuals, families, companies, and churches. And it’s true for Walk Humble. Therefore, in all that we do – writing, speaking, coaching, gathering, etc. – we will seek to live out these values and reflect them to the world around us.

1. Love trumps everything else.

God is love. Jesus is God’s ultimate way of telling us what love looks like, how it works, and what it can accomplish. All of the teachings and stories of Jesus revolve around loving God, self, and others. Love matters more than being right, being rich, being first, or being the best.

2. God is Mystery.

Yes, God has shown us much about himself, but our finite human minds can only fathom a tiny fraction of God’s being, his character, and his ways. We tear down the idol of absolute certainty and instead choose to continually explore the mysteries of God and the universe.

3. Healthy is holy.

Nature, scripture, and our fellow human beings all contribute to our understanding of what is wise and healthy, and what is wise and healthy leads us to real peace and joy. We believe God wants us to be whole and to contribute to the wholeness of others far more than he wants us to be religious.

4. Everybody matters.

We believe that all people are created in the image of God and possess inherent dignity, value, and worth. Our worth is not determined by our economic standing, social stature, race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, or sexual orientation. All human life is precious and everyone deserves to be loved and to flourish.

5. We do justice.

According to the record of human history, including ancient scripture and religious tradition, our story is one of corruption, oppression, and inequality interrupted by the redemptive, often revolutionary stories of Jesus and others who have given their energy and their lives to make a more just society. We seek to join them, not with mere lip service, but by doing the hard work.

6. We love mercy.

Our mission on earth is to lift up the fallen, heal the broken, walk with the lonely, liberate the oppressed, feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, give a cup of cold water to the thirsty, and cultivate compassion and empathy for all who suffer around us.

7. We walk humble.

Humble is a frame of mind, a state of being, and a way of living life. We walk life’s pathway with a sense of humility about who we are in relationship to God, self, and others. We will stumble and stray, but humility and love will restore us and guide us home.

Have questions? Good. We value questions more than a false sense of certainty. Ask away.
